The staff

Five lines and four spaces, and a clef at the start saying which note each one is. The treble clef curls its spiral right around the second line, which makes that line a G: everything else is counted from there, line, space, line, space. It is not an arbitrary system but a visual ladder: going up a line is going up a note. What is hard at first is not reading, it is no longer counting from C.
