Centuries
The century of a year is its first two digits plus one: 1789 is in the eighteenth century, and 1900 is still in the nineteenth. The catch is that we count from year 1, not year 0, so each century runs from 01 to the following 00. Backwards it works the same: 30 BC is in the first century BC, and there is no year zero.

Why Galileo sees the moons of Jupiter: 1610, XVII century. The century is the first two digits plus one, because we count from year 1 and not from 0: the XVII runs from 1601 to 1700. Four dots going round Jupiter, and therefore something not going round the Earth. He published it two months after seeing it.
