Chords
Three notes at once and you have a chord. The four basic ones differ in their third and fifth: major sounds open, minor closes in, diminished begs to resolve and augmented floats with no floor. This is not pure cultural convention: the notes of a major chord sit in the harmonic series of its root, so the ear takes them as “one thing”. The minor chord does not, and part of its colour comes from that.
