Maths · Rung 25 of 30

Volume and solids

The volume of a prism is the base area times the height: for a box, width × depth × height. In a cylinder the base is a circle: π r² times the height. A litre is a 10 cm cube, that is, 1,000 cm³.

  1. How many vertices does a prism with a pentagonal base have?

    • 10
    • 15
    • 5
    • 7

Why The base has 5 sides. Edges: 5 on top, 5 below and 5 vertical, 15. Vertices: 5 on top and 5 below, 10. Faces: 5 sides and 2 bases, 7.

  2. How many edges does a prism with a triangular base have?

    • 9
    • 3
    • 6
    • 5

Why The base has 3 sides. Edges: 3 on top, 3 below and 3 vertical, 9. Vertices: 3 on top and 3 below, 6. Faces: 3 sides and 2 bases, 5.

  3. A box measures 30 × 40 × 30 cm. How many litres does it hold?

    Answer 36

    Why 30 × 40 × 30 = 36,000 cm³, and every 1,000 cm³ is a litre: 36 l.
