Maths · Rung 11 of 30

Powers and roots

A power is repeated multiplication: 2⁴ = 2·2·2·2 = 16. The square root undoes the square: √49 = 7 because 7² = 49. With the same base, exponents add when multiplying: 2³ · 2² = 2⁵. Scientific notation writes a number as a figure between 1 and 10 times a power of 10.
