Flags

Flags are learned in families, not one at a time. The Nordic cross, with the short arm towards the hoist, is flown by Denmark (the oldest in use), Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The pan-African colours, green, yellow and red, come from Ethiopia, which was never colonised. The pan-Arab ones, red, white, black and green, come from the 1916 Arab Revolt. The pan-Slavic ones, blue, white and red, from the Russian flag. Two flags are not rectangular: Nepal, which is two pennants, and Switzerland, which is square. And one carries a firearm: Mozambique.

  1. Which country's flag is this?

    • Sweden
    • Iceland
    • Finland
    • Norway

Why Every Nordic flag carries the same cross offset towards the hoist, inherited from the Danish one. They differ by colour: Sweden yellow on blue, Finland blue on white, Denmark white on red, and Norway and Iceland with a double cross, Norway's blue on white on red and Iceland's red on white on blue, the same three pieces in a different order.

  2. Green, white and red in vertical bands: which flag is it?

    • Italy
    • Mexico
    • Hungary
    • Ireland

Why Italy and Hungary carry the same three colours and differ by direction: Italy vertical, Hungary horizontal. Ireland is vertical too but with orange instead of red, and Mexico has the eagle coat of arms in the middle. France made the vertical tricolour fashionable in 1794, and since then it has meant republic across half of Europe.

  3. Which family of flags does this one belong to?

    • No particular family
    • The pan-Slavic colours
    • The Nordic cross
    • The pan-African colours

Why It is Bulgaria's, from the pan-slavic colours: Russia's with the blue swapped for green, for the fields. A flag is hardly ever a stand-alone drawing: it says which political or historical family it wants to belong to.
